Hispanic Genealogical Society
Dr. Saul Vela Scholarship Essay Contest
The Hispanic Genealogical Society of Houston held an essay contest where
the winners would receive educational scholarships of first place, $ 500,
second place $250, and third place $250. The contestants were to
write essays on genealogical research of someone older and meaningful to
them. The essays were then to be judged by a panel of members with
an educational background. Dr. Saul Vela started the program with
a grant from the Powell Foundation of $1000. The funds were to be
used for educational purposes. In 1998 the winners were given a set
of the journals for their school libraries. This year the club decided
to give college scholarships. Members, Cristina Garza and Dr. Patricia
Flores were the leaders of the committee for selecting the winners.
Member, David Garza assisted in the contest by making the scholarship plaques.
